Aviva Canada Inc. is expanding its in-house legal department and we are currently seeking Litigation Assistants for our Toronto office.   As a Litigation Assistant you will be responsible for supporting Junior, Intermediate and Senior lawyers in the handling of insurance defence (tort) litigation matters. 

Job Requirements:


Responsibilities: 
  • Heavy dicta-typing
  • Filing; keeping lawyer's calendar updated; scheduling examinations for discovery and other appointments; updating internal database
  • Drafting correspondence and pleadings
  • Preparing Affidavit of Documents
  • Preparing and following up with Undertakings
  • Arranging surveillance
  • Opening and closing files
  • Requisitioning cheques
  • File organization
  • Preparing documents for court attendances
  • Preparing court forms
  • Booking travel; including flights, cars and hotels
  • Communicating with insureds and claims handlers. 

Experience/Skills Required: 
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience as a Litigation Assistant in an insurance defence or personal injury litigation environment
  • Excellent computer skills including experience with MS Office Suite, ACL, Legal Essence, and Lotus Notes
  • Proficient in the Rules of Civil Procedure and Court forms
  • Excellent organizational and communications skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Able to work independently
  • Desire to take initiative
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work flow
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Professional demeanor
  • Mature work ethic
  • Good sense of humour.
